Most hockey trades can’t, and shouldn’t, be judged for years. They deserve time to play out, to tip the scales as the players make their marks during their tenure with their new teams.

NHL deadline trades, though, are different. They’re unique because the expectations of the partners in the deal vary so widely.

One team takes the long view, hoping that a pile of magic beans eventually yields a top-six scorer, a sturdy defender or, at the very least, a low-dough roster-filler who can help it stay under the cap. For the other side, the payoff must be microwaved — delivered hot and fast with an eye set on playoff success. It doesn’t matter how the other side of the equation — next season and beyond — plays out. Executed properly, these deals pay off quickly and then it’s on to the next thing.

Here are six players who switched sweaters at this year’s deadline and are on the verge of paying those immediate dividends … and three more who could be downgraded to junk status.

Remember when Tim Thomas was an all-world goalie, instead of a punchline?

The Islanders netminder (it still feels weird typing that), who infamously precipitated his exodus from Boston with his decision to skip a team meet ‘n’ greet with President Barack Obama, was on more than a few minds today as the 2012 champion Kings made their own visit to the White House.

Fortunately, everyone on that team understood the ceremony was about the group, and there weren’t any conscientious objectors at the glorified photo-op. And there was no way they were going to miss a chance to have a little fun at Thomas’ expense.

    At least, Dustin Penner wasn’t.

Well done, Pancakes! That little shot could make next season’s Kings/Islanders games a whole lot more interesting.

    April 2

Davis Drewiske: Darren Dreger of TSN reports that the Canadiens have acquired the young defender from the Kings for a 2013 fifth-round pick. Solid depth move for Montreal.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Chris Johnston of Sportsnet says the Leafs are still in hot pursuit of Miikka Kiprusoff and also are in the market for a defender.

Boston Bruins: An NHL source told that Peter Chiarelli is still in shopping mode. “He’s looking for a defenseman for sure, possibly another bottom-six forward.”

Ryane Clowe: With Jaromir Jagr going to Boston, it’s thought the Bruins are out of the running for Clowe. Several sources put the Rangers as the favorites to acquire the scoreless winger from San Jose.

Nate Schmidt: Not a trade, but multiple sources reporting the Caps have signed the offensive-minded defender that most ranked as the second-best of this season’s NCAA free agent class.

Jaromir Jagr: Mike Heika reports a done deal. Jagr to Boston for two prospects and a pick. Details to come.

Derek Roy: Multiple sources have the Stars dealing the veteran center to Vancouver for a second rounder and a prospect. More to come.

Jaromir Jagr: Renaud Lavoie of RDS reports the Stars have told Jagr he will be dealt today. Frontrunners appear to be Boston and Montreal.

Marc-Andre Bergeron: Renaud Lavoie of RDS says defender Marc-Andre Bergeron is not on the ice at morning skate and should be traded today. Bergeron is useful as a power-play specialist, but not much else. UPDATE: Bergeron has been dealt to Carolina for the previously waived Adam Hall and a seventh-round pick.

Miikka Kiprusoff: Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun reports the Leafs have been given permission by the Flames to speak with Kipper in an effort to convince him to come to Toronto.
