It’s been said that it takes a real man to wear pink, and one has to think he’s even manlier when he’s wearing it from head-to-toe while stopping 100-mph slapshots.
Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard donned a special set of his Vaughn Iceberg series pads and gloves, customized in pink to go with his similarly-themed mask as Detroit celebrated it’s seventh annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night at the Joe Louis Arena on Saturday. The netminder made good use of his new gear, stopping 32 shots in the Wings’ 5-2 win over the Flyers.
Howard also did a meet-and-greet with a fan after the game, one of several things auctioned off the by team – including special pink sticks used in warm-ups – to benefit Liggett Breast Center in Grosse Pointe and the Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills.
While Howard’s measure of pink stood out on the ice, he’s going to have a tough time matching Sharks’ defenseman Jason Demers, who shone — literally — off the ice, rocking a bright pink suit the CBC cameras picked up on as he walked into the SAP Center in San Jose. While the outlet originally mislabeled him as teammate Matt Nieto, Demers was eventually given his (colorful) due.
