Jimmy Howard’s new lid is a tribute to the city of Detroit and the Red Wings. (Tweeted by Bishop Designs)

With the opening of training camp just two (!) weeks away, we’re starting to get sneak peeks at the new paint jobs that are being worked up for some of the NHL’s top goaltenders.

Here’s a look at the lid Red Wings starter/Team USA hopeful Jimmy Howard will be sporting this season. Painted by Bishop Designs, it features an interpretation of the Spirit of Detroit monument on both sides, an olde English D sprouting red wings on the chin, and Hockeytown superimposed over an American flag pattern on the backpiece.

Our take? It’s alright, but not one of the best we’ve seen to this point. What do you think?

Aww man, how could you get rid of the Mustang, Jimmy?  That's as much a Detroit icon as the statue.

We need a helmet with the Joe Louis fist on it.

I still like his old Dr. Octopus mask. Wonder why he wore it for such a short time. Also the spirit of Detroit kind of looks like Kyle Quincey.
